An Education [Schoolhouse School]

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending “Schoolhouse School” at the Schoolhouse Electric building in NW Portland – It was an education in the fine arts of many many wonderful things, including:

~Coffee Making~ hosted by Ristretto Roasters . My husband was impressed when I made sure the french press had a nice “bloom” the following morning.

~Calligraphy~ by the lovely Maybelle Imasa . Ladies fly well across state lines to take her acclaimed courses.  Her work has been featured in Martha Stewart and she learned from {and has taught} the best in her field.

~Flower Arranging~ by Anna Mara Flowers .  The whole study area of Schoolhouse was overtaken with flowers, greens and anything you could imagine to include in the home-made centerpieces that we all took home.

~Table Setting~ by Commonwealth .  We made farbic buntings for the holidays (I regret not getting a shot of) and learned tips and tricks for seating guests, setting a table, party favors, etc.  They gave us mason jars of bourbon sugar as favors for attending.  I ate a spoonful of it later that night =X

~Lunch~  by BirdIsTheWord

~Cocktail Class~ by MeritBadge

In addition to Schoolhouse ladies, Thank you to Egg Press (Their office is in the same building as Schoolhouse – who knew there was all of this amazing space up there? )for co-organizing the event and for all of the letterpress goodies.

Enjoy!

Made and State [Portland Design Week]

My instagram is full of small but amazing brands.

Other than group texts with my girlfriends (occasionally dubbed “lunchtime finds” by Miss Megan Warren), It’s the one place I feel like I can go to get easy beautiful fast visual updates on all of the amazing products that are out there.

Enter Made and State - this site just may bankrupt me in a beautiful way.  The site seeks to gather a collection of artful “Made in the USA” products in one easy place.

Aside from the web presence, Made and State recently curated a show of some of their favorite stateside pieces – all presented in 4 separate apartments in the Pearl in Portland, Oregon.

My favorite part is at the end – enter two young sisters in a well designed room.

Hold on to your Stetsons…

Kinfolk on Film [Portland Design Week]

One of the most visually beautiful magazine’s in print, Kinfolk, held an open house during PDX Design Week at their headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

Photos of their space could take up an entire issue and was representative of the level of taste you find in the mag.  (“Kinfolk Living” spinoff anyone?)

Their website is also a rabbit whole of goodness – stories like “The Lone Wolf Weekend”, “Dutch Oven Apple Crisp”, “How to do Nothing” confront you upon entry.

Can’t say enough good things.

Enjoy the photos <3

Seven Boccia Girls.

What happens when you grow up in a family of 3 girls?  Naturally, all of the little babies end up being girls, too!  7 consecutive Boccia girls in the family tree… Just ask my dad about it!

Check out these awesome little Boccia’s in action (ok, they are officially “Wood’s” and “Costin’s” now but whatevs).  Props to my two sisters Lisa and Lauren… they handle it all with grace and look even more beautiful than ever before.

Guest starring uncle Pete ….

From the Hood to the Coast.

Great people, 198 miles running, epic scenery, testing the body’s limit without sleep, laughing til it hurts, fried chicken at breakfast, strangers, unofficial bathroom areas, beach, beer, sunset, curious lodge in the middle of nowhere, premium coffee.   Sore for days, would do it all over again.

Instant Camera Experiment

A trip to Lancaster, PA…and a bad decision not to bring my camera bag.  This created a perfect opportunity for an instant camera experiment.

After seeing the surprisingly really sweet town of Lancaster, PA – I stopped by Coe Camera right downtown to pick up a few single use instant cameras for about $6 each.  Some chapstick and car key scratches on the lens + gentle cracking of the camera shell made for some fun results.

The indoor market they had downtown was one of the coolest food markets I’ve seen – a great mix of the amish offerings + a whole collection of other regional food specialities.   Check out info here…worth a trip - http://www.centralmarketlancaster.com/

Last three photos are from a beautiful wedding we attended in Lewisburg, PA.

The Olmstead’s | Part 2 | Portland, Oregon Photography

I’m excited to finally post Part 2 of The Olmstead shoot – in video form.  In addition to being cute on film, the Olmstead crew delivered the cute on video as well.   The plan was to capture tons of video footage the day-of, but while editing I realized that we didn’t have enough to keep up with the music track I wanted to use (“Sneeuwland” by Oskar Schuster).

That’s where mom Kelly’s iphone videos came in… and they don’t need any explaining.

The Olmstead’s | Part 1 | Portland, Oregon Photography

Strap on your seat belts and your safety goggles, then brace yourself for an explosion of cute. I met the Olmstead’s at their house to capture a day of fun with Kelly, Adrian and their twin girls (cherubs), Q & R.   The girls got up from their nap and worked the camera like true professionals.

This whole shoot was a blast to capture. If you don’t have kids of your own yet but are thinking about it in the near future…  the Olmstead crew just might convince you to join the club.

Don’t miss…

1.) Cirque du Soleil style acrobatics led by master baby juggler, dad Adrian

2.) Twin puggies! Their squiggle tails make it in most of the shots.

3) “is it time to go?” words followed by the kids knowing to get mom’s purse

4.) what young woman can resist trying on their mom’s heels?

5.) Mom Kelly’s epic hair.

6.) Rihanna/fade baby hairstyle that actually just grew in like that.

7.) Who doesn’t love a good rabbit mask?

Enjoy!

Part 2 of this shoot in video form is coming soon. Stay tuned.

Where the Wild Things are | Part 1 | Portland, Oregon Photography

When it comes to sleepovers at Casa di Uncle Pete and Aunt Lins… we have a lot of fun.

This “Where the Wild Things are” inspired day was no exception – we picked up the niece and nephew in their pajamas, properly outfitted them with their royal garb and ventured into the mysterious land of The Wildwood.  The little prince and princess crossed moats, bridges and rough terrain to finally claim their rightful throne at the end of the winding wooded trail. They hid from undercover woodsmen and listened for special messages sent from the birds through the trees – looking around for the hidden beasts.

Oh the joys of childhood…. (and adulthood — can’t say I wasn’t playing along.)

Stay tuned for Part 2

GIRLS | Portland Oregon Photography

I had the pleasure of shooting some lovely ladies this past weekend in Manzanita, Oregon.   The scene was perfect:  sunset … on the beach…a birthday gal and her crazy buds.   The pure joy and happiness I see in these photos reminded me so much of my teenage years with my hometown girlfriends that I’m still best friends with today <3  These photos are best served with this soundtrack playing in the background – queued up by Santigold – play it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5ocODl0fUI

Pretty Textiles | Portland, Oregon Photography

I did some fabric hunting last weekend and found some real gems.  Check out this lovely chunky table linen from the thrift store – I think I’m going to use it for a summer throw.  No point in subjecting this beauty to food spillage on the table.

Leftover gingham from our wedding tablecloths  =  recycled bow tie gold.  I tried to get Pete to wear it to work… no success yet… BUT SOON- Mabye. Come on… with a chambray shlubby shirt and some burnt orange pants & adidas high tops? Yes please.  Want to make your own bow tie?  Free bow tie pattern curtesy of Angela Osborne from the land down under.

Stay tuned for some gauzy wedding dress fabric from Portland Garment Factory turned children’s dreamy play capes in my next post.  I was lucky enough to catch PGF’s fabric sale they hold every 2 years, and got some goodies for less than $1 a yard on the bolt.

Modern Domestic | Portland, Oregon Retail Photography

I had the pleasure of shooting recently at Modern Domestic, an AMAZING sewing studio on Alberta Street in Northeast Portland.  I took a sewing class with a few other ladies, taught by the studio’s co-owner, Lupine  (pronounced Lupin, like in Harry Potter – the coolest name I’ve ever heard).    Lupine, her cool energy and her fleet of Bernina’s  (the ‘creme de la creme’ of sewing machines – made by the swiss) made machine sewing really easy and approachable.  I sewed with my grandmother’s sewing machine off and on since college but always reverted back to hand when I had some mechanical issues.  With just a few simple tips, I have walked out of Modern Domestic with a pillow, a weekend bag and soon to be a chambray skirt.   The ladies at modern domestic also know how to dress a retail space.  You could spend an hour in this place just looking at all of their neato things, including their mini presser foot museum {!!!!!!!}

Enjoy!

Kids in the Hood

I love a lot of things about Portland, but one of the things I love most is the cool people that live here (and their cool kids).  My neighborhood park is no exception. Now, first rule of this post – if you want to know the easiest way to look like a total creep, follow my steps below:

1.)  Go to local park with camera

2.)  Ask parents to take pictures of their kids

I know… total creep.  But if you know me, you know I have no shame really and there were some special conditions here.  The sun came out of the clouds 30 minutes before sunset {for the first time I think all winter in Portland} and I couldn’t help myself — look at these kids and you will understand.

The Southard’s | Portland, Oregon Family Photography

Get ready… because this post is out of control. Out of control on a lot of different levels.

1.) Gorgeous family
2.) Tiny houses made of cardboard for baby L
3.) I could have taken a whole days worth of photos of cute home decor
4.) Young parenthood at it’s finest… as told through the lens of sophie the giraffe. Can you spot Sophie?
5.) A lot of kids get bounced in the air by dad but Baby L gets some serious air time
6.) Apparently posts with 60+ pictures is going to be my norm… but I can’t help this..I’m spinning out… too much cuteness.

I was so lucky to spend the day with these 3 awesome folks  <3 Enjoy!

Sirrah + John | Portland, Oregon Photography

To say that John and Sirrah are an amazing couple is an understatement.  And to say that I’m breaking some blog no-no’s by posting 60 photos on one subject is also an understatement… but I can’t help it.  I was lucky enough to photograph them this past weekend before they take the next huge step in their lives.  After meeting in college,  Sirrah devoted her life to family therapy and social work and John became engineer-turned-army-helicopter-pilot.  John recently got the nod from Wharton business school to come on down – so they are picking up their life in the pacific northwest and moving it all the way to Philadelphia.  See if you can spot some things in these photos: Insights into their life via their book collection, a grenade hand made in junior high – foreshadow much, an american flag made out of a special cedar that is no longer found in the US, a cavalry hat that has some crazy traditions behind it, a sabor (not to be called a sword).   You guys are the best !!!

Saturday with Dad’s old Nikon FG, Alberta Street, Portland Oregon

I got up last Saturday and I couldn’t wait to shoot my dad’s old Nikon FG for the first time. I solicited my husband Pete and our dogs Roscoe and Indie for a little walk-turned photo shoot on Alberta Street here in Portland Oregon. It was noon when Pete – who, did i mention is a great sport? – reminded me that we hadn’t eaten breakfast or even had a cup of coffee/ tea yet. How time flies when you are having fun behind the old nikon FG. After a little breakfast at Anna Bannana’s coffee we continued down an always interesting Alberta street. Photos include stops at Bolt Fabric, Townshends Tea, Tonali’s Donuts and Salt and Straw Ice Cream Shop … all great spots if you are coming to visit portland anytime soon.

Enjoy!
